Marked 01:43
a shade in my peripheral marking me for penance a distraction from extravagance walking me through a meadow landscaped with thistles and beauty split tomatoes clinging to a wizened vine caught hanging in mid form between summer and deadly frost blushing with unspent passion a glowering red tailed hawk perched atop a stub pine surveying the graceless highway defying glassy-eyed travelers to stray from the asphalt track do not judge my children came the ethereal admonition a Holy Ghostly haunting or, a patronizing apparition? leaving me discerning spirits

I laugh at the native writer’s racially toned jibe should I feel guilty for being a sack of flour? now that my hair matches my complexion I guess I do thanks to NPR’s publicly funded oh so sensitive inquisition

this house can be blown down she looked in the rearview mirror she could see the smoke plume the cloud of smoke hanging over Manhattan the smoke was so thick that it blocked out the sun did you see them falling? tons of paper and all kinds of things I thought it was part of the building then I saw they had arms and legs it was like a scene from a disaster movie the fire was intense; the heat was blistering the roof is crawling with firemen you can’t control something this chaotic it’s not possible to have solid casualty figures they’re bringing in cadaver sniffing dogs primaries were suspended all baseball games are canceled the stock market is closed the Mexican border is shut down theme parks are closed indefinitely spontaneous rallies erupted they handed out sweets to children another moneychanger blames Bush “this is what he wants; this is what he gets” they have articulated their motivation as revenge today’s attacks were remarkably well coordinated this is off the scale and unprecedented this is breaking new ground there has been some indication that this was in the cards the United States will hunt down and punish those responsible people clustered around radios it was an attack on our culture a symbol of so much of what America is we cannot allow this to disrupt our way of life we will be following these stories throughout the day and into the night

about

Here it is. The final volume in a 3 volume series of poems that set me on the path marked Spoken Word Poetry. This volume leans socio-political, somewhat to my discomfort. The poems range from the deeply personal, as in Twice Gone, to the national, as in Quoting Tragedy. In the space between, I chuckle at aging, race & NPR - perhaps risky, but real. I trust that you find somewhere to land in this volume, &, in so doing, live with me a bit of my experience.

As in the previous volumes, I am joined by the incredible Troy Welstad, who interpreted these poems musically. With Troy on the soundboard & keys, we recorded each poem live, in a take or 2. He swears he's no longer my producer, but here we are. So be it. Out of friendship, then.
